Thomas G. Heintzman to receive honorary LLD at January Call to the Bar
TORONTO, Jan. 24, 2017 /CNW/ - The Law Society of Upper Canada will recognize Thomas G. Heintzman, O.C., Q.C., former Law Society bencher and distinguished Ontario lawyer with an honorary Doctor of Laws degree at the January 27th Call to the Bar ceremony in Toronto.
The Law Society confers LLDs, honoris causa, in recognition of outstanding achievements in service and benefit to the legal profession, the rule of law or the cause of justice. Each honorary LLD recipient serves as an inspirational keynote speaker for the new lawyers attending the Call ceremonies.
Law Society Treasurer Paul B. Schabas will confer the honorary degree upon Mr. Heintzman who will then deliver the keynote address.
For almost 50 years, Thomas Heintzman has been one of Canada's leading counsel, having acted on some of Canada's most important cases both at trial and at the appellate level. As a lawyer, educator, author and an extraordinary mediator, Mr. Heintzman has made an immense contribution to the legal profession and the administration of justice in Canada.
Mr. Heintzman is an independent mediator and arbitrator. Between 1968 and 2012, he practised law as litigation counsel with the law firm McCarthy Tétrault. Mr. Heintzman was president of the Canadian Bar Association (1994–95), president of the Ontario Bar Association (1989–90) and a bencher of the Law Society of Upper Canada for eight years (2003–11). In 1980, Mr. Heintzman was appointed Queen's Counsel, and, in 1998, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada. Mr. Heintzman was educated at Harvard University (1962, BA cum laude in economics), Osgoode Hall Law School (1966, LLB) and the University of London (1967, LLB). (See full biography.)
The Law Society will call 153 new lawyers to the Bar of Ontario at this, the first Call to the Bar ceremony of 2017.
