Media Advisory - Lieutenant Governor to open building today as part of Centennial College's 50th anniversary celebration
TORONTO, Oct. 28, 2016 /CNW/ - Centennial College opened its doors to a renovated, ramshackle former factory on Warden Avenue on October 17, 1966. In contrast with its humble beginnings as Ontario's first public college, Centennial is celebrating 50 years of accessible, experiential education in a dazzling and unique new building.
Centennial's 50th anniversary will be formally recognized this evening with a big celebration that will involve the Hon. Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, cutting the ribbon on the college's newest addition: the $90-million Residence and Culinary Arts Centre at Progress Campus in Scarborough.
The dual-purpose building will actually undergo two ribbon cuttings: one at 4 pm on the student residence side, complete with a tour of the state-of-the-art suites and facilities, and the formal opening of the Culinary Arts Centre and Conference Centre at 6 pm. The eight-storey building is the product of a public/private partnership with Knightstone Capital Management and was designed by Diamond Schmitt Architects.
The evening will be a glamorous affair with Centennial's many special guests, government and corporate partners, alumni, employees and retirees in attendance. The School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts is throwing the doors open to its gleaming new kitchens, where students and chefs will be preparing a scrumptious array of international foods. Beverages include craft beers and a special wine created for Centennial's banner year.
Members of the media are cordially invited to take in the festivities and speak with college representatives and guests.
