MEDIA ADVISORY - Long-time Hastings employee to receive special Award of
Merit for heroic actions taken on July 31, 2010 during Private Mambo tragedy
VANCOUVER, Oct. 8 /CNW/ - On Monday, October 11, 2010 Founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Great Canadian Gaming Corporation, Ross J. McLeod, will acknowledge the heroic efforts of David Dahl, Security Officer at Hastings Racecourse with the Chairman's Award of Merit.
On July 31st, Dahl exemplified outstanding courage and strength as he protected a number of guests and staff from a horse mishap that occurred on that day. During the sixth race, the number eight horse, Private Mambo broke from the gate in a manner that pulled down its blinkers and ear cones. With limited vision, Private Mambo headed for the Winner's Circle where Dahl and a number of guests were stationed.
Dahl anticipated that the horse was headed their way and began evacuating the spectators from the area. His quick reaction and selfless focus on the protection of others was nothing short of outstanding. As a result of Dahl's actions to ensure everyone else was safe, he was not able to get out of the Winner's Circle in time. Dahl was struck by the horse and suffered a number of injuries which required him to undergo multiple surgeries.
The Chairman's Award of Merit recognizes outstanding accomplishments of Great Canadian staff members who exude excellence, and perform selfless humane actions in the pursuit of saving lives. The Chairman's Award continues a tradition of recognizing employee excellence and is Great Canadian's highest honour.
