WHY:
As Calgary Public Library enters its second century of service, the Sun Life Financial Arts + Culture Pass is an example of new, innovative library service that targets a vulnerable segment of Calgary's population. With Calgary designated as the Cultural Capital of Canada, we believe this unique initiative will truly support access to quality arts and culture experiences for low-income Calgarians. The Sun Life Financial Arts + Culture Pass is about more than handing out free tickets. It is about sparking the imagination and opening access to a new world of experiences for low-income Calgarians.
Alberta's first public library opened in Calgary in 1912. It was realized through the personal conviction of a 70 year old widow named Annie Davidson and the members of the Women's Literary Club who went door to door in the community to gather signatures for a petition supporting this ambitious project. Founded on this entrepreneurial 'can do' spirit, The Calgary Public Library has grown into a network of 18 locations, that helps Calgarians every day achieve their potential through access to information and resources for lifelong learning programs and services.
