Media Advisory - Marc Garneau joins CJF J-Talk: On the Hill, Online and In the Loop

TORONTO, March 21, 2013 /CNW/ - Marc Garneau, MP for Westmount-Ville Marie (Quebec), is joining one of two back-to-back panels for On the Hill, Online and In the Loop: How Social Media is Changing Politics and Reporting, presented by The Canadian Journalism Foundation and Carleton University's School of Journalism and Communication.

The event takes place at Carleton University's Commons Building in Ottawa on March 27 and is part of the CJF J-Talks series, exploring issues and challenges shaping journalism. Garneau replaces Tony Clement, MP for Parry Sound-Muskoka (Ontario) and president of the Treasury Board.

Social media gives politicians more access to reporters. But is the public losing out on the conversation? Do politicians have more or less control of their message? Does it help reporters strengthen their political sources? The two panels will discuss how social media is changing the way they work.

Political reporters slated to speak on the first panel include Canadian Hillman Prize winner Glen McGregor, Ottawa Citizen; Kady O'Malley, CBC.ca; David Reevely, Ottawa Citizen; Joanna Smith, Toronto Star; and Nick Taylor-Vaisey, Maclean's. Andrew Potter, managing editor of the Ottawa Citizen will moderate.

Politicians speaking on the second panel include Marc Garneau, MP for Westmount-Ville Marie; Megan Leslie, MP for Halifax, and Jim Watson, Mayor of Ottawa. Christopher Waddell, director of the School of Journalism and Communication at Carleton University, will moderate.

This is the first CJF J-Talk to take place in Ottawa.
