TORONTO, June 24, 2018 /CNW/ - Mayor John Tory will present Fran Sonshine with a Key to the City for being a philanthropic and volunteer leader in Toronto.

"Fran Sonshine is a tremendous example of Toronto the good. Through her compassion and generosity, she has contributed to a more positive sense of community within our city. Fran has mindfully led fundraising efforts for important heritage programs and spent thousands of hours volunteering her time so that residents and neighbourhoods can grow and prosper. For her vision and commitment to building community, I am proud to present Fran Sonshine with a Key to the City," said Mayor Tory.
Sonshine is the National Chair of the Canadian Society for Yad Vashem which seeks to promote awareness of the Holocaust and its universal lessons through educational and commemorative programming. Yad Vashem has played a key role in fundraising for the building of Canada's Holocaust Monument in Ottawa. Sonshine has led several boards in Toronto including the Baycrest Board of Directors as well as the North York General Hospital Advisory Board, the Royal Ontario Museum Board of Governors and the Toronto United Jewish Appeal's Annual Campaign. Sonshine has been honoured with numerous awards for her contributions to many organizations and campaigns.

During his term in office, Mayor Tory has officially presented Keys to the City to His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj, Paul Beeston, Rush, Aubrey Graham (Drake), Susan Gapka, Peter Oundjian and Zanana Akande.
Since amalgamation, 62 Keys to the City have officially been presented by Mayors of Toronto. The Mayor awards the Key to inspiring individuals from diverse backgrounds who embody the spirit and potential of Toronto and have contributed significantly to civic life. The Key to the City represents the highest honour that the City can confer on an individual or a group.
