NEW WESTMINSTER, B.C., July 9, 2012 /CNW/ - The BC Professional Fire Fighters' Burn Fund kicks off Burn Camp this Sunday, July 15th, 2012 with 77 burn injured children, over 50 volunteer counselors and support staff who will all be heading up to beautiful Camp Latona on Gambier Island for a week of fun. Campers and their counselors participate in group activities such as swimming, hiking, kayaking, a skit night, and arts & crafts. They also receive valuable one-on-one support from counselors and other burn survivors.
Also in attendance will be the young burn survivors and their families. Children too young to attend camp (under 6 years old) along with their families are invited to participate in the many festivities and food. They can meet other Burn Survivors and see first-hand what camp is about and look forward to when they can go to camp.
A pancake breakfast and Kick Off to Camp celebration is set for Sunday, July 15th from 9:00 Am to Noon at the Queen's Park Baseball Stadium, in Queen's Park, New Westminster, BC. New Westminster Fire Fighters IAFF Local 256 hosts the celebration this year.
Media are invited to meet the campers, chat with their families and the camp's counselors who donate their time — professional fire fighters, burn unit doctors & nurses and adult burn survivors — all who make up 'Burn Camp 2012'.
In conjunction with Burn Camp, the BC Professional Fire Fighters' Burn Fund urges everyone, especially children, to take care and have a safe, injury-free summer. Campers' injuries range from playing with gasoline and matches, to scalds from hot water and liquids, to accidental injuries like house fires and boating and car accidents.
Many burn injuries are preventable. To assist the public, the Burn Fund has issued a list of summer safety tips, available on line at www.burnfund.org
