OTTAWA, Aug. 23, 2013 /CNW/ - Hundreds of Métis citizens from across the province are gathering in Ottawa for the Métis Nation of Ontario's (MNO) 20th Annual General Assembly (AGA) and will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of the MNO. MNO President Gary Lipinski, along with regionally and locally elected Ontario Métis leaders will be in attendance. The Hon. David Zimmer, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs will be attending the welcoming ceremonies Friday evening and the opening ceremonies Saturday morning.

| WHY: | The MNO is the representative government of the Métis Nation in Ontario. The AGA is the largest Métis gathering of its kind held annually in Ontario. It brings together Métis senators and elders, veterans, youth, women and men from across the province to celebrate Métis history and culture while conducting the business of the Métis Nation. |

The traditional welcoming ceremony is taking place on Friday, August 22 at 7:00 pm and will feature ceremonial canoes paddled by Métis leaders, dignitaries and youth from Victoria Island to the Museum of Civilization. This will be followed by a procession into the museum where attendees will enjoy a performance by the Métis Fiddler Quartet and view the premiere of The Métis Nation of Ontario: 1993-2013, a documentary film about the history of the MNO.
