Media Advisory - MHCC to launch training recommendations aimed at improving interactions between police and people with mental illness

VICTORIA, Aug. 26, 2014 /CNW/ - The Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC) will release a new report on Wednesday, August 27 at 9:15 PST outlining 16 recommendations for police education and training to help personnel better prepare for interactions with people with mental illness. The report launch will coincide with the 109th annual conference of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP).

The report, entitled TEMPO: Police Interactions – A report towards improving interactions between police and people living with mental health problems, was written by Dr. Terry Coleman, MOM, PhD, and Dr. Dorothy Cotton, Ph.D., C. Psych, and created in collaboration with a number of mental health and police organizations.

Dr. Coleman will provide a technical briefing at 9:15 AM to media to discuss the research methodology and explain the report's 16 recommendations for police training and education curriculum. The technical briefing will be followed by a press conference at 10:00 AM with Dr. Coleman and the new CACP President.
