TORONTO, Aug. 27, 2014 /CNW/ - With over half of this year's Doors Open Ontario events happening this fall, there are still plenty of opportunities to explore Ontario's rich and diverse heritage. From September 6 until mid-October, over 25 communities across the province will be giving visitors access to architectural showpieces, cultural landmarks and natural wonders – all free of charge.
This year's theme Remembering the First World War: Ontario in Transition recognizes the war's impact on the people of Ontario. Many venues associated with the First World War are participating and open for tours, including: armouries, legion halls, war memorials, hospitals, women's institutes, concert halls, assembly halls, industrial sites, churches and railway stations. Visit these sites to learn more about how the First World War influenced social and cultural change in Ontario.
Since its launch in 2002, Doors Open Ontario has grown from 17 events to almost 50 this year, representing hundreds of communities across the province. Now in its 13th year, the program generates more than 450,000 site visits each year.
