Media Advisory - Morneau Shepell to host webinar on the effects of the Canada Pension Plan enhancement
TORONTO, Sept. 14, 2016 /CNW/ - An enhancement to the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) will have a major impact on Canada's retirement income system, workplace pension plans and the savings behaviour of individuals who are not covered by workplace pension plans. Canadians are asking if this change is for the better and how pension plans will change as a result.
Morneau Shepell will be hosting a webinar on Wednesday, September 21 at 1:00 p.m. ET for individuals who are responsible for their workplace pension plans. The purpose is to address the implications of the CPP enhancement on pension plan design, the retirement-readiness of Canadians and how the changes may affect organization pension plans.
Morneau Shepell Chief Actuary, Fred Vettese, and Retirement Solutions Partner, Ed Lee, will lead the webinar and share their thoughts. Here are some highlights:
- The CPP enhancement is helpful but not enough to avoid a future retirement crisis. Even after the enhancement is fully phased in, only 35 per cent of middle-income Canadians can expect to retire with an appropriate level of retirement income.
- Up to 25 per cent of the population will have "excessive" retirement income. This has its own drawbacks including reduced take-home pay for struggling young families, higher taxes for everyone and an uneven allocation of scarce public funds among the most needy.
- The best bet for getting more Canadians to retire with appropriate levels of retirement income is an intelligent re-design of existing workplace pensions.
Morneau Shepell also invites members of the media to register for the webinar.
