Media Advisory - Municipal Leaders Call for More Efficient, Accountable and Transparent Interest Arbitration

TORONTO, Feb. 13, 2013 /CNW/ - The Association of Municipalities of Ontario, joined by the Large Urban Mayors' Caucus of Ontario and the Mayors and Regional Chairs of Ontario will hold a media briefing to share their check list for improvements to the province's interest arbitration system.

Interest arbitration is the only legal way to settle contract negotiation disputes with essential workers, such as police and firefighters, who are not allowed to strike.  There have been several legislative proposals to change the system and the check list will outline how to improve upon them.

AMO President Russ Powers will be joined by Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion and Gary Burroughs, Chair of Niagara Region.
