Media Advisory - Municipal leaders heading to Ottawa for 2017 AMO Conference
TORONTO, Aug. 8, 2017 /CNW/ - More than 1,900 participants from hundreds of municipalities and other organizations from across Ontario will participate in the Association of Municipalities of Ontario's 2017 AMO Conference, August 13 to 16 at the Shaw Centre and Westin in Ottawa.
AMO's annual conference is Ontario's top educational forum for municipal governments. This year, the program features more than 60 plenary sessions reflecting the broad scope of municipal responsibilities. Keynote presenters include:
- Hon. Kathleen Wynne, Premier of Ontario
- Hon. Bill Mauro, Ontario's Minister of Municipal Affairs
- Patrick Brown, Leader of the Ontario PC Party
- Andrea Horwath, Leader of the Ontario NDP
- Hon. Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities
- Nik Nanos, Founder/CEO, Nanos Research Corporation
- Lynn Dollin, AMO President to give a special presentation on the need for a greater local share of tax dollars for municipal governments
The annual conference is a chance for municipal officials to work together to address shared challenges, to learn and to create new opportunities. In addition to the conference program, municipal staff and officials will take part in delegation meetings with provincial and federal ministries.
Key session topics include the need for new and modern approaches to funding municipal services, changes to the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB), infrastructure and transit, climate change, new waste legislation and changes to the Blue Box program, marijuana legalization, the digital and sharing economy, affordable housing, police modernization, and much more.
