Media Advisory - NDP Abandon "Clean Trains Now" To Save Seats in Northern Ontario
Party Refuses to Push Electric Trains In Spring Budget Over "Toronto-Centric" Fears
TORONTO, Feb. 10, 2014 /CNW/ -
Who: | Ontario Provincial New Democratic Party |
What: | For the third year in a row, the NDP are refusing to make electrification of the Georgetown South rail corridor a condition for supporting the Ontario provincial budget and honouring their promise of "Clean Trains Now." |
Why: | The party is afraid of a backlash in Northern Ontario if they push electrification of the West Toronto rail corridor because rail services in the North where they hold seats have been cut. Calling it "just a local issue," Parkdale-High Park MPP Cheri DiNovo says forcing electrification as part of the budget would be politically unwise. The decision is a broken promise and a huge disappointment for many residents living along the rail corridor. NDP MPPs have repeatedly called for electrification immediately, campaigned on the issue and posted hundreds of Clean Trains Now signs with their names featured prominently all over West Toronto. |
