Media advisory - Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, to speak at HEC Montréal on May 26
MONTRÉAL, May 20, 2016 /CNW Telbec/ - Members of the media are invited to attend the "Social business: Opportunities to tackle social issues" conference by Dr. Muhammad Yunus, recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 and founder of the Grameen Bank, on Thursday, May 26, at 3:00 p.m. at HEC Montréal.
In the 1970s, Dr. Muhammad Yunus pioneered a new approach to business by beginning his work in the field of social business. Through his development of microfinance via the Grameen Bank in Bangladesh, Dr. Yunus created a novel business model characterized by a non-dividend, non-loss structure with a goal of resolving a social problem. Although this emerging field is composed of many different entities throughout the world, all social businesses stress the importance of sustainability, self-sufficiency, and the impact businesses have on both people and the environment.
His visit will also serve as an opportunity to unveil the Social Business Creation competition, an innovative pedagogical platform, organized by HEC Montréal and the Grameen Creative Lab, on which to learn to create social businesses. He will have a virtual meeting with participants of the 2016 edition from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The public may observe the session by following this link.
The competition is structured as a course which provides experiential learning and uses a gamification approach to enhance students' learning experience. Participating students will learn how to use market mechanisms to address social challenges, leverage on a social collective mindset, collaborate with various stakeholders, and develop their business idea into a real business. 93 students from 30 universities in16 countries have so far registered.
His visit also reinforces the intention of HEC Montreal in engaging in teaching and research activities related to social-oriented projects and organizations.
