BEAVER BANK, NS, June 7, 2017 /CNW/ - The Nova Scotia Major Bantam Hockey League is hoping to put some smiles on the faces of some very deserving children this year.
On Saturday, June 10, members of the Nova Scotia Major Bantam Hockey League (NSMBHL) will present a cheque to Children's Wish Foundation of Canada for $25,798.90. The funds raised will be used to help grant the heartfelt wishes of children who are diagnosed with a life-threatening illness.
"Before the 2016-17 season began, the 12 teams in our league committed to raising $10,000 to grant a wish to a deserving Wish child," said Todd Watson, president of the Nova Scotia Major Bantam Hockey League. "I am very proud to say that not only did we meet that goal, we far exceeded it."
The presentation will be made on Saturday, June 10 at 1:30 p.m. during the Nova Scotia Elite Hockey Golf Tournament at the Lost Creek Golf Club in Beaver Bank, N.S. Cheryl Matthews, Provincial Director of the Nova Scotia Chapter of the Children's Wish Foundation of Canada, will accept the cheque on behalf of the foundation. Governors from each of the NSMBHL's 12 teams will also be on-hand for the presentation.
During the past season, each NSMBHL team hosted a Children's Wish game in which all proceeds from the day were donated toward the fundraising effort. In many cases, local wish children attended these games and met the teams before the opening face-off.
Teams also hosted 50-50 draws, toonie tosses, bake sales, and contests to help raise funds.
"Aside from the wishes that will soon be granted to some amazing kids, one of the best things that came out of this whole experience was the life lessons learned by our players," Watson said. "Not only did they learn about giving back to their communities, they also learned about what they can do to help brighten the lives of those around them."
The fundraising campaign was so successful, the NSMBHL executive has already decided that the league will do it again next season and they are hopeful that they will be joined by teams and leagues from across the country.
"The Nova Scotia Major Bantam Hockey League challenges all hockey leagues across Canada to match or surpass our fundraising efforts from this past season," said Watson. "We encourage every Canadian league and team to accept this challenge."
The Nova Scotia Major Bantam Hockey League believes that it is a challenge in which everyone wins.

For more than 30 years, Children's Wish has worked tirelessly to grant heartfelt wishes to nearly 25,000 children and their families – that's three wishes each and every day, all year long!
To date, the Nova Scotia Chapter has granted over 1,100 wishes!
Children's Wish has chapter offices and professional staff in every province, and each wish family is assigned a dedicated Wish Coordinator who is able to personally and carefully structure each heartfelt wish experience to meet the particular needs of the child and their family. Travel wishes include all siblings 21 years and under living in the same household, and families travel worry-free thanks to exclusive Blue Cross insurance.
Our newly expanded reach, which includes children diagnosed with a serious neurological or genetic illness, means continued strong wish referral support through our medical community. Wish referrals continue to increase year over year, and we are proud to maintain our 'no waiting list' policy, thanks to our generous donors.
