Media Advisory - OHRC Chief Commissioner launches book on Balancing Competing Human Rights Claims Français
TORONTO, Nov. 27, 2012 /CNW/ - As Ontario society becomes more diverse, we see more and more cases where rights based on one ground of the Human Rights Code seem to conflict with rights of another ground. This past Spring, the Commission released a new policy that looks at everyday situations of competing human rights and addresses how to deal with situations when a person's or a group's rights come into conflict with the rights of others.
Following up on this work, on Wednesday, November 28th, the Commission in partnership with York University is launching a book entitled, Balancing Competing Human Rights Claims in a Diverse Society: Institutions, Policy, Principles, published by Irwin Law Inc. Part One of the book presents this policy and a series of chapters that provide instructive background for the development of the policy. Part Two broadens the scope of the discussion by exploring broad principles at stake when human rights compete.
