Google's Richard Gingras in conversation with The Globe and Mail's David Walmsley
TORONTO, April 28, 2016 /CNW/ - How does Google see its role when it comes to the future of journalism? Richard Gingras, senior director of news at Google, will discuss the delicate symbiosis between the powerful tech company and the news media it aims to serve, in conversation with David Walmsley, editor-in-chief of The Globe and Mail.
The Canadian Journalism Foundation (CJF) presents this J-Talk, Google: Journalism's Greatest Frenemy?, on May 5 in Toronto.
The Silicon Valley-based Gingras oversees Google News, which connects more than one billion unique readers each week to articles from media in 72 countries and 45 languages.
Google's latest technology allows news articles to load faster on mobile devices, and its algorithms control which pieces appear at the top of a web search. But with constant disruptions to the industry, will Google's role in the news industry shrink or grow more powerful?
The discussion is part of the CJF J-Talks series, exploring issues and challenges shaping journalism.
The CJF thanks J-Talks series sponsor BMO Financial Group, reception sponsor Accenture and in-kind supporter CNW.
