Media Advisory - Ontario Nurses' Association Members in Toronto for 2014 Biennial Convention
TORONTO, Nov. 17, 2014 /CNW/ - One thousand front-line registered nurses and allied health professionals will be gathered in Toronto this week to attend the Ontario Nurses' Association (ONA) 2014 Biennial Convention.
The ONA members will meet at the Toronto Westin Harbour Castle Hotel from November 18 to 20, hearing updates on the work of their union and from a number of guest speakers.
Among the speakers are Minister of Health and Long-Term Care Dr. Eric Hoskins, Marshall Ganz, a veteran grassroots organizer and lecturer in public policy at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Ontario Health Coalition Executive Director Natalie Mehra, who will speak about the changes in Ontario's health care system, and keynote speaker Craig Kielburger, founder of Free the Children and the innovator of the "Me to We" social movement.
On Friday, November 21, ONA members still in town for an education session will participate in a rally at Queen's Park at noon organized by the Ontario Health Coalition. The rally is a protest to stop private clinics from opening in the province and urge the province to save our local public hospitals.
ONA has chosen the theme "I'm in. Stronger Together" for this significant event to reflect the strengthening of the country's largest nurses' union and the sense of commitment members feel to both providing quality patient care and to the collective work on ONA. Front-line members – working with their union – have achieved major successes recently, including the provision of proper protective equipment, training, testing and drilling for nurses in the face of a possible case of Ebola virus.
Media may attend selected sessions during Biennial Convention. Please contact ONA for details.
ONA is the union representing 60,000 registered nurses and allied health professionals, as well as more than 14,000 nursing student affiliates providing care in hospitals, long-term care facilities, public health, the community, clinics and industry.
