MEDIA ADVISORY - Ontario Nurses' Association to Make Budget Bill Submission Today
TORONTO, May 20, 2015 /CNW/ - The Ontario Nurses' Association (ONA), the union representing more than 60,000 front-line registered nurses and allied health professionals as well as more than 14,000 nursing student affiliates, will appear today at the Queen's Park hearing on the provincial budget bill.
ONA First Vice-President Vicki McKenna, RN, will appear in Committee Room 151 at 3:30 pm today to raise concerns about large numbers of RN job cuts across the province as a result of frozen hospital base funding for the past four years; ONA believes the budget bill, An Act to Implement Budget Measures and to Enact and Amend Various Acts, does not address this untenable gap in RN care for patients.
McKenna will call on the government to stabilize Ontario's RN care with that in the rest of the country. Currently, Ontario has the second-worst RN-to-population ratio in Canada.
ONA is the union representing 60,000 registered nurses and allied health professionals, as well as more than 14,000 nursing student affiliates providing care in hospitals, long-term care, the community, public health, clinics and industry.
