Media Advisory - Ontario Nurses' Association to Make Presentation to Committee Hearing Pre-Budget Submissions: Front-line nurses' union says patients need more care
TORONTO, Jan. 28, 2015 /CNW/ - Vicki McKenna, a registered nurses and First Vice-President of the Ontario Nurses' Association (ONA), will make a presentation in Toronto tomorrow to the Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs.
McKenna has been a nurse in London for several decades and will discuss the many challenges facing Ontario's registered nurses and patients and provide recommendations for inclusion in the 2015 Ontario budget.
She will specifically focus on the impact of funding restraint on provincial hospitals and the resulting impact on patient care. McKenna will discuss the need to fund hospitals to allow for appropriate nurse staffing levels necessary in the face of the increasingly complex needs of patients. Insufficient RN staffing is having a negative impact on patient health outcomes, ultimately costing the system more. It is also putting nurses at risk. McKenna will note the rise in violent incidents affecting RNs.
McKenna will speak at 1:30 pm in Committee Room 151 at the Main Legislative Building at Queen's Park.
ONA is the union representing 60,000 nurse practitioners, registered nurses and allied health professionals, as well as more than 14,000 nursing student affiliates providing care in hospitals, long-term care facilities, public health, the community, clinics and industry.
