Media Advisory - Ontario Nurses to Meet in Toronto
Front-line RNs will hear from Premier Kathleen Wynne, learn from New York state nurses' experiences
TORONTO, Nov. 12, 2013 /CNW/ - More than 200 front-line registered nurses from across the province, members of the Ontario Nurses' Association (ONA), will meet in Toronto tomorrow and Thursday to attend the union's Provincial Coordinators Meeting.
The leaders will discuss the issues and challenges facing the nursing profession and health care in Ontario today, including the extremely heavy workloads that have resulted from RN cuts.
ONA members will also hear from Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne, who will speak on health care priorities for Ontarians on Wednesday, November 13 at 9:30 am. The Premier will participate in a question-and-answer session with ONA members following her remarks.
Other featured speakers include Jill Furillo, Executive Director of the New York State Nurses Association, and Pauline Worsfold, Secretary-Treasurer of the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions. Furillo will discuss nurse-patient ratios. Ontario has the second-lowest RN to population ratio in the country, leaving RNs with very heavy patient loads.
ONA is the union representing 60,000 front-line RNs and allied health professionals and more than 14,000 nursing student affiliates providing care in Ontario hospitals, long-term care facilities, public health, the community, industry and clinics.
