MEDIA ADVISORY - Ontario Students Rally in Solidarity with Québec
TORONTO, May 22, 2012 /CNW/ - For 100 days, Québec students have been on strike to oppose tuition fee hikes proposed by the Liberal government. Students in Toronto will be rallying in solidarity with Québec students. On Friday, the National Assembly of Québec passed Law 78, which imposes strict regulations on legal assembly and authorizes severe fines for individual students and students' unions.
"Students in Ontario oppose Charest's government attempts to stifle student action and today students will demonstrate to defend affordable, high quality, public education in Québec and Ontario," said Sandy Hudson, Chairperson of the Canadian Federation of Students-Ontario.

The Ontario government has increased tuition fees by up to 71 per cent since 2006: a similar increase to what has been proposed by the Charest government. As a result of tuition fee increases and government funding cuts, most Ontario universities will draw more money from private sources for their operations than from public sources for the first time ever.
The Canadian Federation of Students-Ontario unites more than 300,000 college and university undergraduate and graduate students in all regions of the province.
