Media Advisory - Ottawa students hit the streets to talk election issues, voting

OTTAWA, June 10, 2014 /CNW/ - Students from Carleton University, La Cité collégiale, Saint Paul's University and University of Ottawa will be in downtown Ottawa today raising awareness about student and youth issues in advance of Thursday's election.

The Canadian Federation of Students-Ontario launched the Generation Vote campaign this election to call on the province's political parties to take action to improve the lives of students and youth. The campaign focuses on five main demands:

• Reduce tuition fees for all students by 30 per cent;
• Stop allowing institutions to charge illegal ancillary fees;
• Re-introduce OHIP coverage for international students;
• End unpaid internships; and
• Increase public transit funding for lower student fares and student discounts.

This election, Tim Hudak has said that a Progressive Conservative government would cut $400 million in student aid. Andrea Horwath has committed the New Democrats to a four year tuition fee freeze, but only after tuition fees increase yet again this September. Before the election, the Liberals distributed misleading materials claiming to have reduced tuition fees, despite tuition fees increasing as much as 80 per cent under their government.

The Canadian Federation of Students-Ontario is the province's largest student organization, representing over 350,000 college, undergraduate and graduate students, including all students at Carleton University, La Cité collégiale, Saint Paul's University and University of Ottawa.
