Media Advisory - Parliamentary Secretary Sean Casey to attend the Our Ocean Conference 2018 in Bali, Indonesia Français
OTTAWA, Oct. 26, 2018 /CNW/ - Canada is committed to advancing measures that will protect our oceans here at home and around the world. Healthy and resilient oceans can help mitigate the effects of climate change. They are also a source of sustainable food and nutrition for the world's population, a key driver of national and local economies, and an opportunity for new sources of renewable energy. They provide 15 per cent of protein for the diets of four billion people around the world. The oceans are a major part of the Canadian economy as they are a source of approximately 350,000 jobs.
Parliamentary Secretary Sean Casey, on behalf of the Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, will be attending the Our Ocean Conference 2018 in Bali, Indonesia. During his trip, he will be advancing key priorities from Canada's presidency of the G7: addressing marine plastic pollution, combatting illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, increasing our ocean knowledge by expanding global observation efforts as well as sharing scientific data and supporting innovative solutions and financing to develop clean and resilient energy systems in vulnerable coastal communities. He will be meeting with Ministers from key countries and stakeholders as part of Canada's ocean leadership.
He will take part in a panel discussion on Advancing Transparency in Global Fisheries, organized by Global Fishing Watch and Oceana at this year's Our Ocean Conference 2018. Media are welcome to join.
