Deterring Unauthorized Access to Health Records
TORONTO, Jan. 26, 2015 /CNW/ - Recently there has been an increase in the number of privacy breaches reported where health professionals viewed and even shared the personal health information of patients for purposes not related to their work. Whether out of curiosity, personal gain or simple concern about the health of friends and family, these unauthorized accesses have the potential to cause harm to patients and undermine confidence in the health system.
In response, this issue will be the focus of an International Privacy Day event, commemorating the 10th anniversary of the Personal Health Information Protection Act, on January 28 hosted by the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario. Featuring a panel moderated by the Deputy Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, Dr. Bob Bell, key stakeholders in the health system will discuss how their organizations are addressing this issue and the consequences for those who breach patient privacy. Panelists include:
- Anne Coghlan, College of Nurses of Ontario
- Robert Devitt, Toronto East General Hospital
- Cynthia Morton, eHealth Ontario
- Brian Hamilton, Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta
An educational campaign is also being launched, including a guidance document and training materials on preventing, detecting, and reducing the risk of unauthorized access.
