156 Year Tradition Celebrates the Opening of the 2017 Shipping Season
at the Port of Toronto
TORONTO, April 3, 2017 /CNW/ - On Tuesday, April 4, media are invited to join PortsToronto's Harbour Master Angus Armstrong and Redpath Sugar to celebrate the opening of the 2017 navigation season as the MV Brant arrives as the Port of Toronto's first ocean-going vessel of the year.
For the past 156 years, PortsToronto's Harbour Master has crowned the Captain of the first ship into the Port with an antique silk and beaver top hat. This year, the MV Brant won the race to be the first ship to Port, bringing more than 19,692 metric tonnes of sugar from Nicaragua's Corinto to Redpath Sugar, a company that has been crafting quality food products in Canada for more than 160 years.

MV Brant Captain Sergii Kurash and his crew will be welcomed at the Redpath Sugar plant and crowned with an antique silk and beaver top hat by Harbour Master Angus Armstrong. The ceremony marks the first ship to arrive in Toronto and the opening of the shipping season. |
Following the ceremony, media will be invited on a tour of the ship and will have the opportunity to go behind the scenes of a working ocean freighter. |
