Wake Up Call Breakfast Series shines a spotlight on distinguished leaders in the fight against prostate cancer

VANCOUVER, April 12, 2012 /CNW/ - On April 17, Prostate Cancer Canada (PCC) will host their annual Wake Up Call Breakfast in Vancouver. At this event PCC will celebrate Dr. Larry Goldenberg, recognized as this year's 'local hero' for his contributions to prostate cancer research and awareness.

Dr. Goldenberg is the founding Director of the Vancouver Prostate Centre and Professor and Head of the Department of Urologic Sciences at the University of British Columbia. He will receive the 2012 Local Hero Award.

"Dr. Goldenberg is a pioneer and a legend in the field of prostate cancer," said Steve Jones, President and CEO of Prostate Cancer Canada. "He wrote what is considered the "bible" on prostate cancer, Prostate Cancer: All You Need to Know to Take an Active Part in Your Treatment. To name just a few of his many honours, Dr. Goldenberg was named to the Order of British Columbia in 2006, was awarded the Scopus Award of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and in 2009, was made a Member of the Order of Canada for his contributions to prostate cancer research and treatment, as well as for promoting public awareness of the disease. We are very proud to present a Vancouver "Local Hero" award to Dr. Larry Goldenberg."

"Being recognized as a local hero is an honour and I thank Prostate Cancer Canada for their leadership in increasing prostate cancer awareness and supporting innovative research," Dr. Goldenberg said.

The Wake Up Call Breakfast is the only Canada-wide business breakfast series dedicated to the fight against prostate cancer. Over the past decade the event has attracted more than 16,000 business professionals and raised nearly $1.9 million for prostate cancer research, awareness, support and advocacy.
