In 1793, Lieutenant-Governor John Graves Simcoe recommended the establishment of naval facilities at Penetanguishene due to its deep and protected harbour. Prior to the War of 1812, Britain began construction of the naval and military establishments. The facilities became a pivotal part of the strategic transportation and defence network that connected Lake Ontario to the upper Great Lakes and served as a base for maintaining the Crown's relations with First Nations.
The provincial plaque will be unveiled in the new Peace Garden that celebrates 200 years of peace with the United States. Following the unveiling, media and guests are invited to take a walk through the harbour area and Peace Garden. Refreshments will be served at Captain Robert's Table Restaurant.
The historic site is open with paid admission. Free admission will be offered to past and present Canadian Military personnel.
The Ontario Heritage Trust's Provincial Plaque Program commemorates significant people, places and events in Ontario's history. Since 1956, over 1,250 provincial plaques have been unveiled.
