Join the Ontario Heritage Trust and the Ontario Human Rights Commission for the unveiling of a provincial plaque commemorating the Ontario Human Rights Code.
On June 15, 1962, the Ontario Human Rights Code was signed and became the first legislation of its kind in Canada. The Code was written under Bill 54 after decades of activism by numerous individuals, groups and organizations who demanded that equal rights and freedom from discrimination be enshrined into law. It consolidated previous anti-discriminatory statutes into one unified body, ensuring competent administration and enforcement. The Code has continued to evolve since 1962 through the continued efforts of human rights activists; it has established Ontario as a leader in human rights advocacy and protection, and safeguards against human rights violations in the province.
This event is part of the Ontario Heritage Trust's program to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Ontario Human Rights Code, in partnership with the Ontario Human Rights Commission.
The Ontario Heritage Trust's Provincial Plaque Program commemorates significant people, places and events in Ontario's history. Since 1956, over 1,200 provincial plaques have been unveiled.
