WATERLOO, ON, Aug. 9, 2012 /CNW/ - Join the Ontario Heritage Trust and Sun Life Financial CEO Dean Connor for the unveiling of a provincial plaque commemorating the Mutual Life Head Office, now Sun Life Financial's Canadian headquarters.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the completion of the Mutual Life Assurance Company of Canada (now Sun Life Financial) head office. Designed by Canadian architect Frank Darling of the Toronto firm Darling and Pearson, the impressive Renaissance Revival style building is clad in light brown and yellow Roman brick, embellished with panelled grey stone quoins and richly ornamented with imported English terra cotta.

In 1921, the original building was enlarged by Toronto architects Sharp and Horner. The monumental scale of the building and its rich ornamentation symbolize the importance and stability of Waterloo's first insurance company and reflect the town's early-20th-century prosperity and sense of civic pride. It remains one of the city's most elegant and imposing buildings.

Following the unveiling, media and guests are invited to take a walk through the building's history throughout the decades on an exclusive historical tour. A community fair featuring local heritage organizations will also take place on the front lawn.

The Ontario Heritage Trust's Provincial Plaque Program commemorates significant people, places and events in Ontario's history. Since 1956, over 1,200 provincial plaques have been unveiled.
