QUEBEC CITY, May 15, 2013 /CNW/ - On Friday, May 17th Quebec City dermatologists and dermatology residents will be hosting a free skin cancer screening event to educate the public on the importance of early detection and prevention for all skin cancers. Participants will also learn how to conduct at-home skin cancer self-examinations.

- In Quebec, there are approximately 22,000 to 35,000 cases of skin cancer diagnosed each year (source: Canadian Cancer Statistics 2012)
- Research shows that 53% of melanoma skin cancers are discovered by the patients themselves and a further 17% by their family members.
- In 2012, an estimated 81,300 cases of non-melanoma (basal and squamous cell) skin cancers were diagnosed in Canada.
