MEDIA ADVISORY - QUEBEC SOLDIERS PREPARE FOR AFGHANISTAN
CFB WAINWRIGHT, AB, Sept. 22 /CNW Telbec/ - Media are invited to observe soldiers conduct intense training on September 26th at the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre (CMTC) in preparation for an upcoming deployment to Afghanistan in late Fall.
The media event is a mix of briefings and demonstrations on the state-of-the-art equipment employed, and interviews with top leadership and soldiers who will be deploying shortly after the completion of the exercise. The day will cumulate with a visit inside the training area from where media will observe a training scenario involving vehicles, pyrotechnics, helicopters, soldiers and actors playing Afghan locals.
When:
- Sunday 26 September at 7:00 a.m. Media are to arrive at CFB Wainwright Main Gate entrance.
- Media visit will be concluded by 3:30 p.m.
What:
- Briefing: Overview of CMTC capabilities
- Demonstration: Weapons Effects System
- Tour: Operational Analysis centre
- Interview & Questions/Answer period: Colonel Lowell Thomas, Commander CMTC
- Interviews with deploying leadership and soldiers
- Viewing/filming of specific training scenario
Approximately 2,650 soldiers of Task Force 3-10 are currently in the Wainwright Training Area. The largest element - the Battle Group - is comprised of 1,500 soldiers based from the 1er Bataillon, Royal 22e Régiment, in Valcartier, Qc.
The soldiers, both combat arms and support trades, are participating in a training event called Exercise Maple Guardian. This is a month-long event, with the most intense period occurring from September 18th to October 3rd.
