REGINA, Sept. 7, 2017 /CNW/ - The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) will honour its fallen members during the RCMP National Memorial Service this coming Sunday at the RCMP Academy in Regina, Saskatchewan.
The Memorial Service honours regular members, special constables, auxiliary constables and civilian members who have lost their lives in response to an operational policing duty in which there was the element of life-threatening risk.
This year, the name of Constable Richer E.-S. Dubuc is being added to the RCMP Cenotaph, Honour Roll Book and Memorial Wall, bringing the total number of fallen members to 238 since the creation of the North-West Mounted Police in 1873.
The RCMP Honour Roll can be found on the RCMP's website. On December 10, 2016, in partnership with Veterans Affairs Canada, the RCMP added the names of the men and women on its Honour Roll to the Canadian Virtual War Memorial (CVWM). The name of Constable Dubuc will be added to both websites on September 10, 2017, the day of the RCMP National Memorial Service.
The Memorial Parade and Chapel Service will be streamed live, and on demand after the event, at: www.livestream.com/rcmpgrcdepot
The Memorial Service will be followed by the unveiling of two plaques honouring the memory of Constable Mike Buday and Constable Chris Riglar, two members of Troop 10 (1976-1977) who served and died in British Columbia. It is believed to be the only instance in which two RCMP members of the same troop have died in the line of duty. The plaques are offered by their Troop 10 comrades.
Media at the Memorial Service
Members of the media are invited to attend the Memorial Parade on Sleigh Square (8:45 a.m.), the live broadcast of the Chapel Service at the Roche Percée Auditorium (10:00 a.m.) and the plaque unveiling in front of the RCMP Chapel (12:30 p.m.).
Bilingual representatives of the RCMP, the Dubuc family and the returning families of deceased RCMP members will be available for interviews in front of the Cenotaph after the Memorial Parade.
Representatives of Troop 10 (1976-1977) and Bob Buday, the brother of late Constable Buday, will also be available for interviews in front of the RCMP Chapel after the plaque unveiling ceremony.
All members of the media must arrive no later than 8:30 a.m. as troops will begin to muster on Sleigh Square by 8:45 a.m. Please park at the RCMP Heritage Centre (5907 Dewdney Avenue) and proceed to the Fort Dufferin Guard Room to receive a visitor's pass and meet with your escort. You will be escorted on base at all times. This procedure is to be repeated every time you enter and leave the RCMP Academy, even on the same day.
Out of respect for the families, members of the media are asked to remain in the officially designated media area, north of the RCMP Cenotaph. Media must also refrain from walking in front of the guests and the Cenotaph or on the Parade Square. We thank you for your cooperation.
