Media Advisory - Ryerson Students Camp Out to Drop Fees
TORONTO, Jan. 31, 2012 /CNW/ - Students at Ryerson University will brave the cold on Tuesday night camping out in front of the Student Centre as part of the campaign to drop tuition fees and increase funding for post-secondary education. The camp out will build momentum for the February 1 rally and march to Queen's Park, part of the National Student Day of Action.
Members of the Ryerson Students' Union and Occupy Ryerson will spend the night in tents to send their message that tuition fees should be reduced for all students. The students are disappointed in the provincial government's recent grant scheme that includes narrow restrictions and pits students against each other while justifying tuition fee increases in Fall 2012.
"Students have been given the cold shoulder by the provincial government, so we're spending the night outside to prove that we're not giving up on the fight for accessible education." said Melissa Palermo, the Vice-President Education of the Ryerson Students' Union and one of the students who will be camping out Tuesday night.
