TORONTO, April 28 /CNW/ - Several hundred Steelworkers, including striking miners from Northern Ontario, will march to Queen's Park Thursday for a massive rally to demand provincial anti-scab legislation.
The rally will include many of the 3,200 Steelworkers who have been on strike for 9 1/2 months at Vale Inco mining operations in Sudbury and Port Colborne. Ultra-profitable Vale provoked the strike by demanding dramatic concessions from its Canadian workers. The Brazilian company is now using scabs to break the strike, rather than negotiate a fair agreement
Also participating in the march and rally will be more than 600 delegates from across Canada who are attending the United Steelworkers National Policy Conference this week in Toronto. At 1:15 p.m. Thursday, the USW members will march from the Sheraton Centre Toronto (123 Queen's St. W.) to Queen's Park.
New Democratic Party MPP France Gelinas (Nickel Belt), is scheduled to introduce an anti-scab bill in the Ontario legislature on Thursday.
