ETOBICOKE, ON, Sept. 24, 2015 /CNW/ - For the first time, the NDP are proving to be serious contenders in Etobicoke Centre, one of the tightest battle grounds this election. Tanya De Mello, NDP candidate and long-time resident of the riding is behind much of the momentum. On Saturday, September 26, De Mello will be joined by Stephen Lewis, former Canadian Ambassador to the UN and Companion of the Order of Canada, and fellow NDP Candidates Phil Trotter, Etobicoke-Lakeshore, for Bring Change to Etobicoke: A vision for hope in Canada. Stephen Lewis will share his vision for job development, investing in our community and restoring Canada's international reputation.
"I am very encouraged to see the NDP's growth in support in Etobicoke and the strength of experienced new candidates like Tanya De Mello" exclaims Stephen Lewis as he prepares for the event. "We know that Canadians are asking for change. Now is the time and the opportunity to make the New Democratic Party the vehicle for that change: the party with leadership and vision."
"I am honoured to be sharing the stage with Stephen Lewis to share the NDP's vision for Canada and Etobicoke residents" states Tanya De Mello, who is a Princeton-educated economist that spent part of her career as a humanitarian aid worker with the United Nations. "Stephen and I have both worked at the UN and we know that Canada's involvement on the international stage has eroded. Whether it's about the refugee crisis or forging international trade agreements that support Canadian jobs and a strong economy, we must do better."
"Stephen Lewis knows this is an NDP campaign of a lifetime for us" claims Chris Jones, long-time member of the Etobicoke Centre NDP riding association. Many residents he's talked to are turning to the NDP for the first time this election. "I'm so proud to be part of bringing the Orange Wave that no doubt will be coming to shore with Stephen Lewis' visit to Etobicoke Centre."
Speakers will be available to speak with the media following the event.
