Media Advisory - Striking OPSEU housing workers to rally at City Hall today
TORONTO, Feb. 20, 2013 /CNW/ - Striking housing support workers will rally outside Toronto City Hall today at noon to press their demand that management at First Homes Society - funded by the city - return to the bargaining table. Management walked away from contract talks two weeks ago.
Today's rally is scheduled for noon to 4:00 p.m.
Homes First receives more than $6 million in annual funding from the City of Toronto. The workers, represented by Local 540 of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU), are calling on city council to demand that management get back to the bargaining table and negotiate in good faith. The union has filed a bad faith bargaining application with the Ontario Labour Relations Board.
Members of Local 540 work with more than 500 low-income tenants in shelters and homes in 16 locations across the city finding them permanent residency.
