Syncrude President and CEO to provide update on recent waterfowl incident
EDMONTON, Oct. 27 /CNW/ - Syncrude President and CEO Scott Sullivan will discuss the recent waterfowl incident at a news conference in Edmonton on October 27th at 2:30 p.m. MDT.
On the evening of Monday, October 25th, Syncrude and Alberta government officials responded to an incident involving waterfowl landing at various locations at the Syncrude site, including roads, parking lots and the Mildred Lake and Aurora settling basins.
Syncrude's waterfowl deterrent system had been in full operation at the time. In addition, extra air cannons, flare guns and air horns were used at the Mildred Lake settling basin in an attempt to scare the birds away from the area, but with no response. To date, 350 birds have been euthanized due to coming into contact with bitumen on the surface of the settling basin. All other birds have since been scared off unharmed.
Syncrude has launched its own internal investigation into the cause of the incident and is cooperating fully with the Alberta government in its investigation.
Mr. Sullivan will provide an overview of the incident and Syncrude's ongoing response.
