WHAT: Taxi drivers protesting two-tier, racialized plate system WHO: Itaxiworkers Association WHERE: Toronto City Hall WHEN: Thursday, May 6, 2010, 1:00 p.m.
Asafo Adai has won a hearing before the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal to challenge the City of Toronto's two-tier taxi plate system of "Ambassador" and "Standard" plates.
Asafo and the Itaxiworkers claim the city has created a discriminatory system in the taxi industry, with racialized groups relegated to holding the second-class Ambassador plates.
Five days of hearings have been set at the Human Rights Tribunal, beginning May 10.
Asafo Adai will attend Thursday's demonstration outside city hall, as will his legal counsel Peter Rosenthal, a leading civil and human rights lawyer.
