Media Advisory - The Honourable Mary Jo McLaughlin Nolan to receive honorary LLD for her extraordinary mentorship and advocacy for the marginalized
LONDON, ON, June 15, 2017 /CNW/ - The Law Society of Upper Canada will present a degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa (LLD), to The Honourable Mary Jo M. Nolan at its Call to the Bar ceremony in London, Ontario on June 19.
As part of its Call ceremonies each year, the Law Society awards honorary doctorates to distinguished people in recognition of outstanding achievements in the legal profession, the rule of law, or the cause of justice. Recipients serve as inspirational keynote speakers for the new lawyers attending the ceremonies.
The Honourable Mary Jo M. Nolan was called to the Ontario Bar in 1983 and has been dedicated to the administration of justice throughout her career as a social worker, court manager, counsel, case management master and judge of the Superior Court of Justice.
In particular, she has been an advocate for access to justice for the most vulnerable residents in Windsor and southern Ontario, especially troubled families and children.
She has also been a mentor and an example to hundreds of law students and lawyers, not only as a lawyer and a judge, but also as an educator at the University of Windsor, inspiring many to follow their passion and to serve the public. Retired from the bench since 2014, she continues to work as an arbitrator and mediator and is an inspiration for women in law. See full biography.
Law Society Treasurer Paul Schabas will award the honorary LLD to The Honourable Mary Jo M. Nolan, who will then deliver the keynote address to the 85 new lawyers at the ceremony.
More than 1,600 new lawyers will be called to the Bar at six ceremonies throughout the province in June.
