TORONTO, June 13, 2016 /CNW/ - Toronto Hydro and Toronto Fire Services will be going door-to-door in a York Gate Blvd. community — in the Jane and Finch area — to promote neighbourhood safety and fire awareness and prevention.
Toronto Hydro's Brighter NightsTM program has been replacing outdoor porch lights in priority neighbourhoods since 2012. By replacing old, often burned out or inefficient porch lights with energy efficient CFLs, and encouraging residents to leave their new lights on at night during off-peak hours, the program brightens neighbourhoods at a minimal cost. The goal is to help enhance lighting in the community and increase electricity literacy.
New this year, Toronto Fire Services is also attending the event to talk to residents about the importance of smoke alarms, how to test them and maintain them. They will also hand out literature about fire safety and home escape plans.
The City of Toronto's Community Crisis Response Program (CCRP) team and Toronto Police Service's 31 Division will also be pitching in with local residents to help with lighting installation and door knocking.
