TORONTO, Aug. 30, 2016 /CNW/ - Toronto Hydro, along with other community collaborators, will be going door-to-door in a Flemingdon Park community to promote neighbourhood safety. Councillor Jon Burnside (Ward 26 – Don Valley West) will also be attending.
Toronto Hydro's Brighter NightsTM program has been replacing outdoor porch lights in vulnerable neighbourhoods since 2012. Volunteers replace old, often burned out or inefficient porch lights with energy efficient CFLs, and encourage residents to leave their new lights on at night during off-peak hours. The goal is to help enhance safe lighting in the community and increase electricity literacy.
Toronto Fire Services is also attending the event to talk to residents about the importance of smoke alarms, how to test them and maintain them. They are handing out literature about fire safety and home escape plans.
The City of Toronto's Community Crisis Response Program team and Toronto Police Service's 54 Division will also be pitching in with local residents to help with lighting installation and door knocking.
