TORONTO, April 25, 2014 /CNW/ - In the wake of demonstrations planned across the country, the Conservative government is backing down from making sweeping changes to federal elections. Saturday, students, youth and concerned citizens will rally to call on the government to stop tinkering with the flawed Fair Elections Act and scrap it entirely.
The Unfair Elections Act, as introduced, would eliminate key provisions of our current election system - including vouching and voter ID cards. The Act would also muzzle Elections Canada, cancel voter education and engagement programs and end pilot projects on campuses to improve youth voter turnout.

In response to growing public opposition to the Unfair Elections Act, Minister of State (Democratic Reform) Pierre Poilievre announced that the government will be making some changes to the most dramatic elements of the Act. Serious concerns remain about provisions in the act to limit the powers of Elections Canada and end the use of voter ID cards.
The Canadian Federation of Students-Ontario is the largest student organization in the province, representing more than 350,000 college, undergraduate and graduate students in all regions of the province.
