TORONTO, March 29, 2012 /CNW/ - A solidarity bus of 50 Toronto Steelworkers will leave Friday morning for Quebec's Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean region to join an international rally March 31 in support of 800 workers locked out by resource giant Rio Tinto.
WHAT: Solidarity Bus Trip of Toronto Steelworkers headed to Alma, Que.
WHEN: Bus leaves at 8:00 a.m., Friday, March 30 (interview and photo ops)
WHERE: Bus leaves from United Steelworkers Hall, 25 Cecil Street, Toronto
The Steelworkers Toronto Area Council organized the solidarity bus trip to stand with workers who have been locked out of their jobs for three months at Rio Tinto Alcan's aluminum smelter in Alma, Que. The locked-out Quebec workers are members of United Steelworkers Local 9490.
This weekend's trip marks the second visit to Alma by Toronto Steelworkers, who joined a previous rally in support of the locked-out workers in early March.
"Support is growing internationally for the working families and communities that are under attack by Rio Tinto," said Steelworkers Toronto Area Council President Carolyn Egan. "People are fighting back against Rio Tinto's destructive demands to replace good, unionized jobs with non-union, low-paid labour."
