Media Advisory - Unifor to hold rally in solidarity with Mexican workers
OTTAWA, Sept. 21, 2017 /CNW/ - Unifor will hold a rally to demonstrate solidarity with Mexican workers, their families and their communities, as the union renews its demand for a renegotiated NAFTA that works for all workers.
"Unifor stands with the people of Mexico who are suffering after this devastating earthquake," said Unifor National President Jerry Dias. "We want to show our support, through this tragic time and in the effort to help them build a more prosperous future. When the North American Free Trade Agreement was signed, we were told that it would lift up wages and bring Mexican workers out of poverty and that hasn't happened."
Unifor has joined with labour unions from the United States and Mexico to call for improved working conditions and increased wages for Mexican workers. As NAFTA renegotiations are set to begin in Ottawa, union members from all three countries had planned to rally together at the Mexican Embassy, due to the earthquake labour representatives from Mexico are no longer able to attend in person but the message of international solidarity will be carried forth. Members of the public are invited to join the rally.
