Media Advisory - Whine, Whine, Whine: Do municipalities really need more taxes? - Revised date
CALGARY, Sept. 15, 2014 /CNW/ - In recent years, there has been increased criticism, mostly from mayors, that municipal governments are too constrained in their revenue-generating abilities. Advocates for increased spending on services and infrastructure in Canadian cities argue that property taxes, the most substantial source of municipalities' own-source revenue, are insufficient to meet infrastructure needs, and that cities should be given the power to levy sales taxes or income taxes. But are these alternate sources of tax revenue the answer, or should property tax remain the main source of tax revenue for Alberta's municipalities?
Media are invited to a press conference for the release of a report by The School of Public Policy that will challenge the widely held view that city governments need access to wider ranges of taxes in order to finance public services and infrastructure.
