Media Advisory / Photo Opportunity - Local artists bring Malala Yousafzai's story to life for International Women's Day
The Malala Effect exhibit launches new Plan Canada children's book about Malala; shines spotlight on push for girls' education
TORONTO, March 3, 2014 /CNW/ - In celebration of International Women's Day on March 8, Plan Canada is launching Every Day is Malala Day, a children's book honouring the spirit and commitment of Malala Yousafzai - the young Pakistani activist who survived a Taliban attack and continues her avid campaign to bring education to more girls around the world.
Presented as a letter to Malala and illustrated with photography, Every Day is Malala Day, highlights how every successful woman, in any part of the world, was once a girl who had access to education and resources.
Written by Rosemary McCarney, Plan Canada President and CEO, with Plan International, the book's powerful story and imagery capture how Malala Yousafzai's tireless campaign for education serves as a daily inspiration for girls around the globe. McCarney wrote the book to generate awareness about the challenges girls face globally, including being denied their right to an education, and to help promote an understanding of why girls' rights are important.
To bring this book to life, Plan Canada is hosting The Malala Effect, a two-day free art exhibit at the Walnut Contemporary Gallery which will present artwork from 24 local artists who have taken direct inspiration from the book. An invite-only launch event hosted by Lisa LaFlamme, Chief Anchor and Senior Editor at CTV National News and Because I am Girl Celebrated Ambassador, will be held on March 6. The exhibit will then be open to the public March 7 and 8.
