Media Advisory – Shining the Light on Safety in the City’s At-Risk Neighbourhoods
TORONTO, July 11, 2012 /CNW/ - Neighbourhoods across Toronto are working with Toronto Hydro-Electric System ("Toronto Hydro"), City of Toronto Community Crisis Response Program (CCRP), Toronto Community Housing and Toronto Police Services to brighten their communities by installing energy efficient light bulbs. The group has teamed up to "Light the Night" and help make neighbourhoods safer one compact fluorescent light bulb at a time.
WHO: | Toronto Hydro, City of Toronto Community Crisis Response Program, Toronto Community Housing, Toronto Police Services and local volunteers. |
WHAT: | Toronto Hydro representatives and local volunteers will be canvassing neighbourhoods to install compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs). |
WHEN: | There are FOUR Light the Night events happening around Toronto in July: |
• Wednesday, July 11 | |
|
Chester Le Boulevard - 160 Chester Le Boulevard (Pharmacy Ave. & McNicoll Ave.) 1 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. |
• Saturday, July 14 | |
|
Mount Olive Drive (Finch Ave. W & Kipling Ave.) 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. |
• Tuesday, July 17 | |
|
Tandridge Crescent (Elmhurst Dr. & Albion Rd.) 4 p.m. - 8 p.m. |
• Thursday, July 26 | |
|
15 Canlish Road (parking at St. Lawrence Martyr Church next to Canlish Road) 3 p.m. - 5 p.m. |
WHY: | The objective of the Light the Night program is to brighten vulnerable neighbourhoods and help make them safer, by installing compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) and encouraging residents to leave them on overnight. A CFL bulb left on between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. costs about a penny a day because they use 75 per cent less electricity* than standard incandescent bulbs. |
Light the Night events are a community based response to safety concerns. This community outreach program aligns safety with energy efficiency by focusing on how valuable lighting can be to our communities. | |
