Media Advisory: Black Creek Community Health Centre workers take strike to Minister of Health
TORONTO, July 13, 2021 /CNW/ - Black Creek Community Health Centre workers on strike will picket the constituency office of Minister of Health Christine Elliott on Wednesday, to demand the Minister's intervention in their employer's bad faith bargaining practices.
OPSEU/SEFPO Local 5117 members working at Black Creek Community Health Centre have been on strike since June 12. The health care workers were forced into a strike position due to their Executive Director Cheryl Prescod's refusal to give workers the one per cent wage increases permitted until Bill 124, despite the Ministry of Health giving funding assurances for these wage increases.
Not only has Prescod denied the health care workers fair wage increases, but she has also refused to apply any increase to a wage grid and refused to be transparent with the union about the allocation of Ministry funding to the community health centre.
"Prescod has been providing significant, steady wage increases for herself and her directors for years, but she puts her workers through the wringer when they ask for one per cent," said OPSEU/SEFPO President Warren (Smokey) Thomas. "Something smells fishy here, and the Minister should be looking more closely into where these public dollars are going."
